陳方若:中國(guó)商學(xué)院亟需改革-尋找窮理和務(wù)實(shí)之間的平衡

      第十一屆華人學(xué)者管理科學(xué)與工程協(xié)會(huì)國(guó)際年會(huì)于2018年7月14日在中國(guó)寧波舉行,上海交大安泰經(jīng)管學(xué)院教授陳方若在開幕式上做了題為“中國(guó)商學(xué)院亟需改革 - 尋找窮理和務(wù)實(shí)之間的平衡”的演講。具體內(nèi)容(中英文)如下:


女士們,先生們,早上好!

 

      歡迎來到華人學(xué)者管理科學(xué)與工程協(xié)會(huì)第十一次國(guó)際年會(huì)!

 

      去年,我們?cè)趶V州中山大學(xué)慶祝了協(xié)會(huì)成立十周年。今天,我們?cè)趯幉ü?yīng)鏈創(chuàng)新學(xué)院步入?yún)f(xié)會(huì)的第二個(gè)十年。這是一件激動(dòng)人心的事!

 

      建立協(xié)會(huì)和舉辦年度會(huì)議的主要?jiǎng)訖C(jī)之一是增強(qiáng)學(xué)術(shù)研究與管理實(shí)踐之間的連接。我們的年會(huì)匯集了學(xué)界和業(yè)界的精英,他們之間的深層對(duì)話促進(jìn)了學(xué)術(shù)界和企業(yè)界之間的交流。這件事我們已經(jīng)做了十年,將來我們還會(huì)繼續(xù)這樣做。

 

      商學(xué)院正處在一個(gè)十字路口,尤其是中國(guó)的商學(xué)院。諸多挑戰(zhàn)擺在我們的面前,比如優(yōu)質(zhì)生源的緊縮,對(duì)商業(yè)教育價(jià)值的譏諷,商學(xué)院在大學(xué)里的身份危機(jī)等等。商學(xué)院教育的價(jià)值越來越只是體現(xiàn)在一個(gè)強(qiáng)大的校友網(wǎng)絡(luò)和一個(gè)知名度比較高的文憑。但是,獲得一個(gè)商學(xué)院的文憑并不代表管理能力的提升。 我們?cè)诖髮W(xué)里的地位經(jīng)常受到不同程度的質(zhì)疑,許多其他院系的同事認(rèn)為我們只會(huì)賺錢,很少其它貢獻(xiàn)。我聽到過的最嚴(yán)厲的批評(píng)是“商學(xué)院削弱了管理實(shí)踐”。顯然,我不一定同意所有這些觀點(diǎn)。從個(gè)人情感來說,這些說法是很難接受的,畢竟我的全部職業(yè)生涯都花在了商學(xué)院。但不得不承認(rèn),話雖難聽,卻有它的道理。

 

       我們?cè)谧非髮W(xué)術(shù)的嚴(yán)謹(jǐn)性的同時(shí)常常忽略了與實(shí)踐的相關(guān)性。我們暫且把追求學(xué)術(shù)的嚴(yán)謹(jǐn)性稱作“窮理”,而把與實(shí)踐的相關(guān)性叫做“務(wù)實(shí)”。在過去幾十年的發(fā)展過程中,商學(xué)院的鐘擺越來越靠近“窮理”,而離“務(wù)實(shí)”越走越遠(yuǎn)。我相信這是目前商學(xué)院面臨的許多問題背后的根本原因。為了解決這個(gè)根本問題,我們需要改革商學(xué)院。這個(gè)改革不是在窮理和務(wù)實(shí)之間二選一,而是要做到兩者兼而有之。具體如何才能夠達(dá)到這個(gè)目標(biāo)還需要不斷地探索,但毫無疑問,這將是一項(xiàng)十分重要而艱巨的任務(wù),因?yàn)槲覀冃枰獩_破現(xiàn)有的種種約束。商學(xué)院改革需要我們大家的不懈努力。作為上海交通大學(xué)安泰經(jīng)濟(jì)與管理學(xué)院院長(zhǎng),我的主要工作目標(biāo)將是重塑價(jià)值觀,改革學(xué)院體制機(jī)制,最終回歸商學(xué)院的本源,在窮理和務(wù)實(shí)之間找到一個(gè)恰當(dāng)?shù)钠胶狻N蚁M覀兊膮f(xié)會(huì),和每屆年會(huì)累積發(fā)展起來的這個(gè)學(xué)科群體,將為商學(xué)院的改革起到積極的推動(dòng)作用。

 

      最后,在接下來的兩天里,我們將有很多值得期待的會(huì)議內(nèi)容,包括精彩的主題演講、圓桌討論、青年學(xué)者論壇、女性學(xué)者午餐會(huì)、最佳論文獎(jiǎng)和為數(shù)創(chuàng)歷史新高的特邀分論壇。在此我要特別感謝本次會(huì)議的承辦方,寧波供應(yīng)鏈創(chuàng)新學(xué)院,也要感謝會(huì)議學(xué)術(shù)委員會(huì)、組委會(huì)、最佳論文評(píng)審委員會(huì),感謝他們的指導(dǎo),感謝演講嘉賓、與會(huì)代表和眾多的志愿者,謝謝他們的支持和付出。

Ladies and Gentlemen! Good morning.

 

    Welcome to the 11th annual international conference of the Chinese Scholars Association for Management Science and Engineering (CSAMSE) !

 

    Last year, we celebrated our 10th anniversary in Guangzhou. This year, we embark on our second decade in Ningbo. It's exciting!

 

    One of the key motivations for establishing the association and the annual conference is to improve the connection between academic research and practice. Our annual conference brings together scholars and practitioners to foster a meaningful dialogue between academia and industry. We have done it for ten years, and we will continue to do it in the future.

 

    Business schools are at a crossroads, especially those in China. There are a range of challenges. Shrinking pools of good applicants, cynicism about the value of business education, identity crisis within the university, to name a few. The value of business school education is increasingly associated only with establishing business connections and getting a diploma. But the credential is rarely associated with improvement in managerial performance. Our colleagues in other parts of the university think that all we do is to make money, not much else. The most damning comment I have heard is “Business schools weaken practice.” Obviously, I do not necessarily agree with all these comments. Emotionally, they are just very difficult to accept, after all, I have spent all my working life in a business school. But there is some truth in all this, you have to say.

 

    We pursue academic rigor, often at the cost of sacrificing relevance. In the spectrum between relevance and rigor, the pendulum has swung closer and closer to rigor (and specialization), but farther and farther away from relevance. I believe this is the root cause behind many of the problems now facing business schools. To address the root cause problem, we need a business school reform. It is not about either rigor or relevance. It is about achieving both rigor and relevance. Exactly how to do this is not entirely clear. It would undoubtedly be a monumental task, given all the constraints there are. Business school reform requires a lot of sustained effort from all of us. This is what I intend to do as the Dean of the Antai College of Economics and Management, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, which begins in a month. And I hope our association, and this community, will be an important and positive force in this effort.

 

    For the next two days, we have much to look forward to: outstanding keynote speeches, industry panel discussions, the Young Scholars Colloquium, the Female Scholars Luncheon, the Best Paper Award, a record number of invited sessions, etc. My gratitude to the Ningbo Supply Chain Innovation Institute China (NSCIIC) for making the conference possible. Thanks also to the Program Committee, the Organizing Committee, the Best Paper Award Committee for their leadership roles. Thanks to all the speakers, participants and volunteers for their support.
